| Trash and Recycling
No Trash Service (saving ~$10/week) This may not seem like a big deal, but we haven't had a trash service for 8 or more months now. It started when someone stole our trash bin and we didn't feel like paying the $80 fee to replace it.
1) We still have free recycling, and our bin is overflowing every week. This includes #1 and #2 plastics, glass, metal, waxed papers (like milk cartons), and "bulk paper".
2) We also have a compost pile. This has helped because most of the "trash" is things that don't rot. We actually try to "wash" food packaging that can't be recycled (and buy little of this.)
3) We've stored 4-5 bags of trash from the whole winter, and I took 6-8 to work when I had guests coming over.
This seems like a lot to me...but a big portion is from our neighbor. It seems like we generate about 1/2 of a kitchen bag per week or less, and some came from construction projects on the house.
4) Going to the dump seems so wrong. I hate to drive up to the pile of trash and just dump my stuff on the ground. It feels like littering. Yet this is what we are all effectively doing.
It reminds me of my brother-in-law's approach to hunting: If you can't kill an animal, you shouldn't eat meat.
